What do you think a good map must have?

Hello,

I was just wondering; what do you (forummembers) most like and dislike about maps? Like a lot of allyways or high, accesable houses or a lot of debris or...whatever.

Well, post your pro's and anti's please,

greyhound

P.S

For example, I like:
- big, accesable houses,
- at least one open area from where I could snipe,
- bushes,
- objective maps,
- a river going thru a map,
- a lot of alternative ways to get to enemyterrotory.

i like bridges in maps if they are large and especeally with a flag they are always a place for heavy firefights. Always fun to play those maps with bridges

Most of all good map should be FUN.

In addition to that it's benefitial if the map has good visuals. That said I like maps that have slopes like ups and downs (campagne) and small visual details in the right places. A balanced texture set is a must.

I like maps that are fun to play with every weapon, instead of just rifles or whatever.
A good map should promote teamplay and have multiple routes to a key spot like a flag or objective.

i like pie.

oh...i like maps that require some kind of teamwork/strategy to win. that said, most maps can evoke that, though it also depends on who's playing. a few points other's have said i'd also support:
- allows for sniping, MG, CQB.
- open routes have some kind of cover.
- no hidden pictures of Waldo...ok maybe a few.
- personally I like at least some natural terrain.

i have become partial to smaller maps, with an urban setting, with buildings to go into and out of ( like anzio ). Bridges with a 2nd possible route around it is always nice.

All great maps have a bridge, no joke. Think about the official maps.

Charlie doesn't, unless you consider the planks over trenches. Merderate has a bridge though. Glider has a bridge, but id wish more fighting took place near that bridge.

I like Big maps such as dod_points_b1. The hedgerow map, theres roads that go all over the place, well ok not all over but theres plenty of different paths, and theres the wide open area. Even though the maps big it doesn't take long to get to the battle zone. Great map. I wish there were more maps like dod_points_b1.

EDIT: I also want a urban map, but unlike any other. Bocage almost captured what im thinking of. I want a city that the players can enter every building, theres no set paths. For example, a map where the allies spawn on a road going into town, and the axis spawn in some bunker under a destroyed house. Bunker could be a air raid bunker. Theres flags throughout the town. The road will go into the town and splinter into other roads. Every building can be enter and some walls could be blown out so u can go into the ajacent building. I don't even know if this is possible but it would sure be cool. Plz forgive me if I didn't explain it well enough.

Well ava has got to be in everyones top five favourites, but there is no bridge.

Its close knit in parts, but still a very simple design.

I like pretty maps like feldfaur (?) and kamf. I dont particulaly like extremely fast paced maps tho I love anzio. Sometimes flugplatz gets too pacy where u have to be on the move all the time to stay at the top of the leader-board.

Map design doesnt have to have alot of waypoints, tho I think switch could do with a fix in that respect, even tho i quite like it as it is...

Avalanche has a few overpasses, those are sort of bridges.

i like variety.
look at avalanche, donner, and kalt for example

maps that are meant for only one thing can be boring
caen for example

but a well mapped objective stage would be fun
kraftstoff for example

There is a newer custom out called Narvik (http://blackwatch.recongamer.com/download.php?view.31) that has one of the best "bridge battles" I have seen yet.

A truly good map as multiple routes (but not too many).
A few destructables (think Charlie, not Caen).
A DISTINCT centerpiece (Think of the church plaza on Switch, or the courtyards of Caen and Avalanche)
Map balance .... but not an exact mirror image of the map (example is Donner)
Good framerate for ALL players. (even those without high end puters and those with no video cards)
Spawn protection. (Keep the first objective/flag AWAY from the spawn area)
Fun extras. (Download Dod_Xroads. That map is LOADED with fun extras)
If it is a big map, have advancing spawn points.
The hardest part is to make a map where ALL weapons can be used equally.

If you have all this, then it will be a fun map.
