OK i am new to graphic design but very keen to get into it. i have down loaded gmax 1.2 installer, gmax help, gmax tutorials and gmax sample tectures, is this a good start? am i downloading the right stuff? i have a number of sites with this software available but dont now what is best...

well if you want to model, then youve downloaded the right stuf, but if you want to get into skinning then u should try photoshop:) u can get a trial version from the adobe website

Also, Gmax is a good program but you'll need to get SMD importers and exporters if you want to make models for DoD or any other half-life based game.

Personally I use Milkshape for modelling but you can model in GMax, export as 3DS and then bring it into Milkshape for finaly rigging and export.

And if your completely new to Half-Life modelling you might find this useful.
