Brut potentialy crazy idea No 00001

I had an idea earlier today and thought.
Since so much of the community reminises about the old days, I thought maybe A beta 2.0 or watever server could be set up and everybody could join and have an annual weekly game or something along the lines of that. People who remember the old days of dod could go back and the more new ppl could get a feel of how dod used to be.
So what do you guys think?

T'would be nice, though getting enough people on the server, getting the server, getting everyone's old version set up properly, would be quite the trick of management. Who here's good at administration and crap? G-Man?

Certainly not the guy who's been managing the Russian pack since 1.3b, that's for sure.

If somebody provides a server and a place to download 2.o for those who for some bizarre reason don't still have it on a disk somewhere, it may just be a good time.

Well, I must say,

Ive been around since the 1.3b days, and although DoD has been my favorite game throughout all the changes, etc., playing 2.0 wouldnt be my idea of fun. Id basically be wanting all the cool new features that are available in the current steam version.

Just think, you couldnt even alt-tab anything before steam without problems. Most of 2.0's maps are the same ones, DoG1 being the only one I miss. No beach snipers... Besides, 2.0 itself had spawn telefragging problems, lol, remember Anzio's??

The only version I'd play besides the current is 3.1b, because I miss the bleeding and the Para maps.

Even though alot of ppl dont like the Para maps, it was nice to have the option of playing another game mode. I personally think that DoD is lacking in this category.

Novel idea, but really, if you wanna go back for a trip down memory lane, go to 3.1b

Ummm....as for a beta server? No way, I've played since 2.0 (ironicly) and I wouldn't take money to go back to playing that. 1.1 is so much better in terms of everything that It would be work just to play 2.0

Also, now that I think about it, I'd rather play a really old version of DoD, like b1.0, those were fun days.

erm hopefully you mean 2.1 and not 2.0, since 2.1 is basically 2.0 with annoying bugs fixed.

hmmm, when i said 2.0 it was only an example, i basicly meant any beta version. Doesnt seem to be the feedback i expected, more are against the idea than for it so maybe i can put it on the back burner.

Thats because most people who say "remember the good ole days" are either:

1) Crotchedy old fools

2) folks who never played the betas and say they did to seem '1337'

or

3) Miss the state of the community, not the game itself.

Pretty bold statement?

Well, look how much the game is progressed! any given game of DoD is more fun to play now than it was 6+ months ago.

EDIT: I realize that may seem like a flame. Its not, all in good fun, folks. To each his own.

i say that that we should play the glory of beta 1.0

but really, whichever beta is played i'm all for it.

I have to agree with voodoochild on this one. I joined dod in the 1.2 era, and whole 2.0 was great and all, it still seems fairly recent compared to 1.2 or 3. If a 1.2 or 3 server were made, i would certainly play. Just the other day I was thinking about going through the axis spawn to get into the back bunker on dod_omaha. I really hope someone actually does this.

I'll play ;)

I'd rather play 2.1 or 3.1 over any earlier or later versions. :D
