Ridiculous Mapping

How hard is it to make a map in DoD?

I haven't looked into it, I use to do duke nukem 3d maps years ago.

I'd like to do some stupid ones that aren't all broken towns and battlefields, like maybe some pirate/space ships, an amusement park, something with monsters from half-life possibly, a downtown at night with neon lights and bars, then maybe some helter skelter maps with no real theme, just with death match in mind, and perhaps a fun house (mirrors would be even cooler to add though I don't know if that's possible it was in DN3D) etc etc.

I think a hockey rink would make a good (retarded and historically unfit) one. :)

I don't know why more people don't make maps that aren't WW2 themed.

Probably because the player models, weapons, sounds, voice commands, are WWII based.
Monsters can't be implemented in dod. Same for Counter-strike. I think you could explore your ideas with Half-life or Sven-coop. Their fgd file has much more exotic stuff.

well, when hl2 is out and dod2 is out and assuming we get to have vehicles that move on waypoints (not driven). i would like to see a silly map where you are facing each other across a big ole street. like frogger. a street with hundreds of Volvos driving to and fro. and you have to make your way through that mess to attack each other. like frogger.

also, built in class limits for snipers and mg's at none. forcing you to make your way accross the street.

did i mention it'd be like frogger?

a tetris dod would be cool.

how about a pacman dod. they did a pacman Wolf3D (it was the bonus level in the die furher die mission)

like frogger. with Volvos. and ww2 guns.

Well i'm making a map that's complete wilderness, not a sandbag or piece of rubble in sight.

You better have an ambience sound named:

dod_RunThroughTheJungle.

I've got the .wav file if you need it. :D

But i agree Sven-coop fgd is really exotic.

I just wish DoD could improve/fix the current series of axis_grunts, allied_grunts and allied_barneys. They should improve the AI like in Sven Coop. They should also allow monstermaker entity to work for these DoD ai characters ( i tried but not successful), so i could at least respawn these AI characters and create a super-large battle as frantic as Sven-Coop ( Imagine this in DoD: "We are pinned down sir, they are pushing us back!" -or- "Steady boys, don't fire yet, wait till they come in range or they'll flank us!"). And they should add functionality for the DoD AI barney medic to actually heal players. I really thing Co-op gameplay is very enjoyable, especially if its in an authentic WW2 setting where you can operate DoD's MGs, mortars, mortar trigger_changetargets, mounted guns, garands, thompsons, bars, springfields, etc.. You could recreate something like in BOB, with those AI enemy tanks/vehicles coming by (fix moveWith in DoD!!) and things start to get desperate. And spawn some snipers randomly in various houses (since multimanager has a random choose function in DoD). And becos it's co-op, you fight for one another and it feels good.

Yes, HL monsters can be implemented in DoD, just use Botman's Monster plugin. http://www.planethalflife.com/botman/monster.shtml

dod needs a 1x1 or 2x2 maps, with lots of teleports and instant respawns:)

Probably because they'd never get played by more than a handful of people?

It comes down to your motivation, I think. If, in mapping, you have any hope of having your map(s) played by anything other than your and your friends, you stick to the WWII theme.

I'm not saying don't try it. Hell, make whatever map you like. :) I wish I had time to learn to map...

hehehe :P i already have a lot of ambient sounds in it, jungle noises, river noises, waterfall noises, crickets and bird chirps, when you get into the one man capture zones you hear owls hooting (different hoots for each flag) and the 2 man cap in the middle is a crow caw, very nifty indeed. I don't think i'll be putting any songs in though heh.
