12-10-2003, 02:06 PM
Ive been out of the editing frame for a little while now... but im back, and this is my first offering...

its the Maus... the mobile fortress

it weighed about 200 tons (only 2/3 were ever made), top speed of 13km/h and had to be transported via special 14 axel rail cars

the height was just under 2 people tall (btw i need a exported play model, so i can size the model appropriately)

tis about 800 odd polys atm before optimisation

i hope ya like :)

send me the model and mesh and I'll whip up a skin for you.

sure :)

i only have it as .lwo (lightwave) but i can export it to 3ds if you think it'll be easier :)

i still have to lower the poly count some (there are some places, like the wheels of the tracks that i tried fancy stuff... and it adds about 150-200 polys to it (i beveled them inwards) ... ill also need a 3ds or something similar of a player model that i can import into lightwave so i can size the tank.. .atm i have it realsize... and thats 10 mtrs long and 3.7 mtrs high :)

but apart from that the modelling part is done :)

i made it with mappers perhaps using it as a map objective

there were only like 3 fully made, and was gonna be used to plug holes in the atlantic wall... and only 1 saw combat (the other 2 were prototypes)

btw... panther? lost me on that one

Yes... anyone has made this tank yet... It was pretty common in normandy and in the east front...

There were 11 prototypes, only one fully functional, another one without turret. When the soviet army reached the testing range, the german engineers and the crew blew the tanks up.

It's a rumour that the functional Maus faught against the soviets, but it's doubtful.

Anyway, looks great so far. Get a good skinner.

Some sources state that according to Porsche, Hitler's aim for the Maus was to plug holes in the Atlantic coastal defenses on the Western Front, where it's limited range and mobility wouldn't have been too much of a hindrance.

got that from Achtung Panzer site... thats why i decided to make it :)

anyways... got the poly count down a bit...just gotta fix up the track wheels then ill send it away for skinning :)

and i might do the panther next :)

it just occured to me that LW and 3ds type formats handle polys in different ways... when i turned the tank into triangles, it made it upto 1500! :o

im doing some heavy poly reduction now

Have you milkshape, because if you have get the LW plugins for it, then just save your LW object out as normal, and import it into milkshape using the plugin. If you have made the UV map/maps in LW you may have to run the command smooth all in milkshape so the textures show up. Also note that it's best to convert your quad polys to triangles in LW, because if you leave this to milkshape it can screw up sometimes. And if you use the LW plugin to export models to LW format from Milkshape, always tick the layers box that comes up when using the plugin. This make sure that ever individual UV map is in a different layer when loaded into LW, making editing much easier. Oh and also it's best to sort out your smoothing groups in LW before importing into milkshape, by cutting and pasting back different polygons on the model, so there not joined to other polygons that you wish to be in different smoothing groups.
