Decompiling: Taboo I know, but I'm trying to save my OWN maps from the HD crash.

Heyo, just was thinking that I remember hearing about a decompiler. I know it's a touchy subject, so maybe if you could PM me that would be cool. Basically I'm wondering how well it works, ie is it good enough that I can at least get all the brush work for my maps back. I've found some .bsp files that are pretty close to where I was at on a few and that would really make my day if I could use those to get the maps back. Anyhow, PM me if you have info on how well it works and especially if you have a link to the program so I can try it out. Thanks.

The decompiler will screw the brushwork anyway. Note that most of us figured out alone how to get the program. Giving it to you won't make you more clever. What will make you more clever is to search it and find it without asking :)

Or you could read my post, see that I wanted some feedback on it, and just PM me. In case you didn't know there are more than one version and instead of dling them all I was hoping to have someone who might know give some advice, guess that's too much to ask from some people.

Also, it's not really helping to tell me that I should make backups seeing how this is after the fact, but I guess if it makes you feel better go ahead.

the only way i know to decompile bsps is with winbspc, but it doesnt realy work that nice. i beleve its becaus its made for quake and turns out to work with half life some time. i beleve it doesnt work when u have textures included in ur BSP. also some brushwork will get screwd up and all of ur textures will need work. it might eaven be easyer to completly remake ur maps. good luck sacing ur maps.

Its easier to just remake the map from scratch than correcting all the fubarred brushes!!

try using a Hard Drive recovery program :P

El: Wish I could. =\ The drive won't spin up. It's a pretty new drive, but it got zapped when my power supply blew up. Anyhow, I've tried it out a bit and so far things look ok. Lots to fix, but in some cases better than starting all over. Time will tell I suppose.

I've heard about people called Drive Recovery Technicians. They can try and get back info off a HD once its gone to the crapper; yet, these people cost a bit of money form what i know. Unless you really want your maps back i wouldn't suggest using them. if ya wanan try google the term Drive Recovery Technicians or DRT or sommin like that

Yeah, couple hundred bucks from what I hear. I like DoD mapping, but not that much =)

There's no taboo w/decompiling a map as long as you don't pull stuff out and paste it into your own. Decompiling can help you understand how a mapper did something. I have no toruble w/it.

It is really helpful when you first start mapping to get an idea of the sizes other people have used for things like walls and crates and such. My very first map ended up being awfully proportioned (the player was about half the height of my door ways), but after looking at some map source files, I got a better idea of how to do stuff.
