The big problem with submodels

since, it's 4am i'm gonna sum it up,

it's the fact that there's not a seperate file for each class

so if i put camo on my hat, that means not only the sniper has it, the unteroffizer has it too...which looks bad, if i could have class specific mesh's then it would be ok

That and the others problems:
-that people are angry they cant just update their old player models using simple tools
-Not many people know how to use the submodel system to its full extent
-MSA community is pissed off

pretty much sums it up.

Going beyond the obvious problems submodels will cause for everyone who models, I'd like to bring up the point that those of us without modelling abilities will likely not be able to mix and match releases anymore. For instance, I think SS camo looks great on sniper/mg, but don't necessarily want grenadiers running around in full camoflauge.

I just had a thought... I hope it turns out to be right ... You know how the DoD Retail version will have extra maps, and new menu stuff??? Maybe this free mod update is a watered down version to shrink the file size for the people downloading it...Maybe the full retail version has separate class models like the old DoD... I mean... If you got everything you wanted in the free version why would people even buy the retail version other to to shell out a few bucks to the Devs for their hard work these past couple years? Even though I downloaded it I still plan on buying my copy when it hits shelves...

/me crosses his fingers, and hopes he's right...

I would think the references to the models and such are hard coded into dod.dll. That being the case, you couldnt alter how the MDL files are called or you'd need two different dll's which would conflict on servers.

What about the impending HL patch? Wouldnt' that fix that? Or at least be able to alter that? If not then I can only hope that this decision is changed for when DoD get updated to HL2 in the fall...

Also... then why did the old Paras work as standard player models before... If someone renamed the para file to allie-light then the para model would show up in game as that class without the helmet of course... SO why wouldn't it be possible for 2 different client versions (one with separate class models, one para styled) to run simultaneously on any given server... ???
