I've looked through a few tuts and couldn't find a good explanation of vis groups.

Now my basic understanding of vis groups are that you would say group a section of say grass together into one vis group (give it a color and a name) and then that whole area will be rendered at once when its seen by the player. Is this correct?

Also if certain areas are vis grouped together will it up or down r_speeds?

in Hammer Vis groups are items coloured the same way, that all appear and disapear together. to HL they dont exsist. Export your .rmf into .map .map is a step closer to HL. in .mp you will noticew the fact when you load it all the Vis Groups are gone.

Vis groups are just a mapping aid for Hammer, nothing more nothing less. To dod their about as important as the colour of your socks.
