[SprWIP] Dusty Shot Dust Sprite

I remember back in the beta days when I used to have these (http://uhhkevin.homestead.com/files/downloads/dusty.jpg) really great shot smoke sprites. Unfortunately, 1.0 came and with it brought many limitations in what could/could not be changed (crosshairs, for example).

Anyway, while I can't reproduce the smoke effect made by the aforementioned shot smoke sprites (I forgot who made them), I did my best to get something more visible for 1.0. Sorry for the terrible pic.

Looks great! Nice work!

Only suggestion, perhaps it should be a bit smaller?

I actually know for a fact that there were hit puffs, definetly in ww2. I have seen a video i downloaded on my kazaa and 3 germans were executed by a firing squad and there were massive hit puffs. The same size as seen in Saving Private Ryan. If you want to see it type ww2 firing squad ogrish, or a different combination of those words.

I don't know if this always happened, but when using these shot sprites the 3rd tank on Zalec spawned this huge black cloud of smoke after it was destroyed. I'm not really sure if this was caused by my sprites or if it was always like that.

I tried going back to the defaults and the huge black smoke was still there, but I swear I never saw it there before.

Why can't these 3.1 sprites work in 1.0?

The main thing that's different from the old shot smoke sprite system and now is that 1.0 limits the amount of time you can see the smoke. No matter what, the sprite will fade away after 1-2 seconds, leaving little chance of visibility. What I've tried to do is make the sprites that are used as big and as opaque as possible.

I was only able to take that shot because the sprites I used to use lasted 3-4 seconds.

That's unfortunate. I loved those huge long lasting bullet impacts.

This was one of the custom bullet impact sprites from 3.1. Do i have to retime it or something so it works in 1.0?

There's 5 files

shot_smoke
shot_smoke1

etc. These are the correct files? Directly overwriting them with the 3.1 sprites had no noticeable effect.

Kiff, the new sprites used are called large_smoke_01_ind.spr and puff.spr.

large_smoke_01_ind.spr is a non-animated sprite that sort of serves as the smoke's "background" (it's the black part in my first pic). puff.spr is replicated 3 times and sort of expands out from its original point, creating a dissipating effect. It's the white part of the smoke you see.

I dunno if that sprite will work. You may have to change the transparency mode of the sprite or something.

And yes, that Garand is Trigger's model with Russ's skin.

I'll release soon (whenever I can get a decent screenshot).

Release now!

I've just realised how crappy the bullet wall effects are in dod. After playing Max Payne 2 and even Counter Strike, Dod is really, really lacking in this department. The effect when you hit a sandbag is good, but bullets hittings walls in general isn't so great.

Another reason to like 3.1 more.

If you want to see real realistic smoke fx go try RvS's and Max Payne 2 ofcourse. Max Payne's wins indeed. The smoke last long when hitting hard concreet or something but when hitting softer things it disappears faster wich is realistic.. If I only knew how to change the code for how long the smokefx last in DoD... :(
