I don't feel like I need to formulate a 'cohesive argument' I am simply against this Idea, its quite terrible.

What's so bad about it?

Well, i don't think you understand me, i can't stand that rule that leagues make, i think it's stupid, really really stupid.

but for the people who are using those custom stuff and want to play in a match they must reinstall dod if they don't have a copy of the original models/sounds.

with steam you don't need to do anything, just make dod read the models and the sounds from a diffrent place and for that you need a server command, a client one will be fine too but then you can't enforce it so... server's side.

The outcome will be more people using customized stuff cause they don't need their original ones always because they can have both and switch on/off without a problem.

More using custom sounds/models = more people making custom sounds/models = bigger editing community = FUN = Better game = Good idea and we support it ? :D

Give it a 2nd thought please, and if you do support it please show your support in that thread.
Thanks, mort.

You could also just as easily now rename the models folder something before matches and just change it back after without any of the nasty copying and pasting or reinstalling business =P

Nobody ever needed to reinstall dod because they installed custom content, unless they made the MISTAKE of not backing up what they were copying over. If you play clan matches / leagues, you should have known by now to backup your default models/skins/sprites/etc. If you didn't, sure, then you have to reinstall, but that's because of a mistake.

Steam does make it easy to revert back to default models, but forcing it on everyone on a PUB to use default models IMHO isn't a good idea. If you're so worried about people using illegal skins and models, might wanna look into joining a clan and doing league play, where they try to minimize that as much as possible.

i can see why people would see this as a bad thing, should make it server side is able to force standard dod.

The only way this makes sence is if its client side, and since you can already simply put a little "1" on your dod folder and make the game read from cache files anyway its not needed. Its just one more way for the highly customizable HL engine to go from fun and cool to lame and overly controlled.

(READ: Cheating-Death, Punkbuster, Steam, Adminmod, AMX, ect.)

No I do not endorse cheating but too many well meaning developers make 3rd party software that control and ruin the game.

I guess its a no-win situation, either you have folks who cheat and break the rules, or a bunch of gung-ho admins tossing around the ban stick trying to get rid of all the bad seeds.

I guess it dosn't matter one way or the other, it wont change anything in the end.

Ahhh yes a very valid point, unfortuantely for me when i installed steam it was my own custom dod that was installed into steam so now i have a dod folder thats fresh install reading it like custom dod. no solutions for me besides reinstall steam which aint happening :)

I usually play on lan where we use any models we like, but I had this idea that a list of accepted custom modifications could be drawn up, the vast majority of modifications would be acceptable.
This would allow people to keep their modifications and still play in leagues etc.
The only problem i can see is policing this system.
Though each mod could be given an unalterable code and this could would be sent to the server upon joining if the code was acceptable the player would be allowed to join.
if the code was unacceptable defaults would be enforced before joining.
