Since Kominaa has released the rmf of his classic map cr44, Dodmaps.com decided to perform a mapping contest to choose the best new version of this evergreen classic map.

You can find more information at the dodmaps.com boards :

http://dodnetwork.com/dodmaps/viewtopic.php?t=165

Please note that your work shall be rewarded ;)

What do you do with the .rmf file to be able to edit the map?

Hmmm, although I'm no real mapper, I'll definitely screw with this and see what I can come up with. Who's the original mapper, Rotkopf?

Kominaa.

Sounds like there's going to be alot of great re-makes coming. Just please make sure that they all don't have the same name so they can be put our maps folders and played on servers at the same time without confusion and overwriting problems. A good idea would be to put the mappers initials, like if the mapper was Rob Smith the map could be do_cr44_RS, this would keep you all from stepping on eachothers toes.

I looked everywhere, Eagle, and it's nowhere to be found. You'll just have to pick whatever wad you want to use and just go at it.

@Zero: me too, as far as texturing and model\prefabs go... But I dunno where the bugs are at, I've never really played this map before... Hrm. Kinda interesting taking someone else's stuff (with permission) and trying to put your take on it. Good fun so far ;)

Itīs about making Cr44 even better, not just retexturing! Since you guys have the rmf, you can do anything with it. Thatīs why you have 4 weeks time - should be enough to do some crazy stuff with the map.

The best variation will be designated dod_cr44 then. Prizes and stuff not to mention ;)

I started my snow & night version some time ago.
All bugs are fixed. Mainly worked on the brushwork, retexturing and entities (lot of breakables!).
Basically it is zafod+kalt+cr44.
But it won't be ready for release in 4 weeks :D since i am still working on the HUD icons ;)
top view (http://perso.wanadoo.fr/kruger/maps/cr44_krug.jpg) where i am at the moment. The 2 bridges can be used now, the bots have told me they like ;D I'll probably add new areas outside the map, to make new spawns and advancing spawns.
Of course I won't forget to give credit to the original author.

Yer that happens to be the trend since v1.0 :( I want dim gungy feeling maps that have an atmosphere like ramelle, zafod and a few others did.

Donner, Chemille, Forest, Charlie are the only ones close to have the itty gritty feeling the pre v1.0 maps had.

Now lest get those dim itty girtty maps out boys :D

To the guys running this contest....

Do you have any set rules such as:

*Must keep the basic layout.
*Must follow Kominaa's wishes regarding the rooves (should be made impossible to access).

Also, if, as a consequence, you hope to have this map be considered for "official" inclusion, you should consult Waldo/FD/Kami and incorporate DoD design standards (no swastikas, texture limits, etc...) into your contest rules.

Lastly, you should contact some of the leading custom servers (Kustom Kettle, Mike's <assuming they stick w/ DoD>, Buxom Bombshells, etc...) and get agreement that these servers will run the winning map.

Just some ideas.

Oh, and I second the suggestion that you have a naming convention that differentiates between contestants.

Oh, and another suggestion, that the winner be given the title dod_cr44, no more beta and no one else w/ the name. That alone would be a great prize.

Zao
10-20-2003, 10:35 AM
In addition to the above (which I agree with and was following before it was posted here) could we also get a known bug list for this map so that those of us who haven't played it a lot before can know where to start looking?

Rotkopf
10-20-2003, 11:36 AM
Shane, I said all of this before, just look into the topic over there at the dodmaps.com forums. The final version WILL be designated dod_cr44 , and it will be spread with help of all popular custom maps sites. Swordzkof and I never had any problems, and Iīll contact the other sites soon enough as well. :)

Actually, the news item and the related post are not particularly descriptive of the contest and what you want.

That may be how you'd like it to be. If so, that's fine. I'm glad cr44 will be brought up to date. I just think you have a chance to do the mapper, the map, and the community a favor by giving more specific contest guidelines...

Anyway, either way, I'll be watching w/ anticipation. This is a great map that needs to be "finalized". :)

You'll need to do the same for Belgiumx2 next. :)

ie. no models of nude ladies :)

Rotkopf

@Shane :

As I already mentioned, weīre going to test all submitted versions. The one with the best changes will get rewarded - and good changes include bug fixes , fixed roof walking and much more, of course! However, itīs up to the mappers what to do with the map. They even could rework large parts of the map, thatīs fine with me as well! Just donīt expect your map to be selected if all you did is some small retexturing.... I think some people here have really good ideas what to make with this pure diamond :D

What it boils down to is, what you guys (DoDNetwork/Maps) want the contest to be about.

If you want the winner to be of the quality necessary to be considered for being official you need to clearly state that in your contest rules so that people leave out the swastikas, don't go over texture and other technical limits etc....

In any contest you are judging people. They should know how they're being judged.

For instance...

*Is roof access ok or to be removed?
*Is it OK to allow people to continue to be able to fire/deploy from the creek bed (in essence, underwater), etc...

Anyway, sorry, I don't mean to sound like I'm telling you how to run your contest. Its a great idea and I'm all for it and willing to help you w/ a test server if you have the need... but when I read the rules and posts, its pretty vaguely defined. But, as I said, if that's the intent, that's cool.

I'll shut up now. :)

*goes in corner.... whistles*

Fair enough. :)

I would even wager that, assuming you have enough interest, will be so different at to be cr45 and, hopefully, more than 1 great map will be standing at the end.

Rotkopf
10-20-2003, 12:58 PM
Well, I think CR44 was a short form for "Crossroads 1944". Therefore it probably will remain CR44.... well, who knows? If the winning map is drastically different from the old version we might call it "Crossroads 1945" maybe ;)

travis
10-20-2003, 08:57 PM
i think the winning map should still be cr44 as thats what it is. we must still respect the original designer. we are merely modifying this map - not making our own. for example if you buy a ford and throw a spoiler kit, sports exhaust, turbo ect. on it - its always gonna be a ford. its always gonna be cr44, with mods

Shane
10-20-2003, 11:19 PM
lol, you guys misunderstood. What I meant was that hopefully there will be more than one great map that comes out of this contest. The winner, of course, would be dod_cr44, but the 2nd place could maybe be dod_cr45 or cr43, was being toungue-in-cheek, really.

Other than bug fixes it needs very little "improvement", I hope people don't go overboard and ruin its very simple, very clean, and very fun gameplay.

You can play it on our server.

Competition or not, all we want is to play on good maps. Or at least bugless maps.

Basically the player was often stuck in the river (major problem), could walk on a tree line (ideal poor camper spot), and it was possible to go on the roofs (some did not appreciate).

-> A few clip brushes and a lot of vertex manipulation.

If you are looking for informations about more bugs:
- play the map a lot (anyway you will play yours before release i hope)
- read the chat messages ingame
- read as many forums as possible
- exchange ideas and opinions with players who know the map.

It took one year to Andy to release dod_campagne.

Quakah
10-27-2003, 05:05 AM
I don't know but I liked roofwalking in this map, it gives another touch to this map, I think you should even improve this in any map you're making. At least till a certain point, like not getting on that treeline or even a camperspot on one of the buildings near the bridge, I think 1st to 2nd flag should do it.

Zao
10-27-2003, 08:15 AM
Well, because of Carnage's response, I did some serious, and I mean serious searching around the net and found a few other forum discussions about this map's exploits and/or bugs. I more or less figured where the problems would be, I just wanted to know if there were any others that people knew of. The issue of the invisible rooftop thing was mentioned a lot but nobody wanted to say where it was, so I'm just going to block off all the rooves except those around the second bridge which I'm going to make an accessible objective.

That map was too small for me... make it bigger: increase the street lengths for straight streets;
provide alternative entry points for the spawns (too much spawncamping on this map);
make the river longer (but provide a curve for r_speeds reasons) and make the low-down entry points to the river father along;
Make the bridge a steel type bridge (a la schwetzingen)- would make interesting sniping from the river...;
Make the sandbags at the bridge destructable!

And, well, get rid of all the bugs as you say, and irritating points!

Can I count on you to improve the graphics too?
Thx AngryBeaver!

it wasnt just the roof access thats annoying, from the roofs you could get onto the trees at the far end of the river, this gae you a prefect view down the river and onto the bridge.
also from that point you can then make your way onto the broken bridge.

One more suggestion:
Use models wherever possible (ie instead of vehicles, etc; accesories or props in buildings).

I've made quite a few models, purely aesthetic, for my DOD_BURN, which if all goes to plan will be compiled this wednesday (it takes 9 hours to compile on a P3 at the moment, due to HINT brushes, and the fact the map is BIG).

Stuff like shelving, food, mechanical thingies, gun parts, etc can all be modelled nicely, but to keep down the entity count, I put lots of accessories into one single model- eg a hammer next to some paint pots, a brush, etc, all as one model.

The use of submodels can also be used to vary the items on say a shelf (the main model).

11-04-2003, 05:21 AM
I think people are not posting pics so they donīt give ideas to their oponents (itīs a contest, ins't it?).

Anyway I'm planning to make an (almost) 100% wood map, including the bridges, water and sandbags, so players will feel like they are fighting in a factory that saw trees (I don't know this in English, something like a wooden improvement factory).

I'll post pics soon!

Shane

Suggestions (for those who care):

*Remove ALL roof access
*Make it so you can't fire if you're prone in the water
*Give allies a counter to the german windows that overlook the water, or remove the german windows.
*Make the germans para (I wants mah fg-42! :) )

If someone has a serious contender and needs to playtest somewhere, PM me.

As for the water, go to Donner, sit in one of the puddles. You'll see you can't use your gun. That's how cr44 should be. One of the lamest things about it is that guys will lay prone in the water. It should be fixable, but I have no idea how.

As for the fg-42, Germans only, the Allies have the BAR.

first the problem:
my i-net provider has finished my connection till december 2003
so i can be only online on weekend at friends :-(
is it possible to give it to the jury a bit later?!?
cuz 19.11. is a wendsday
thats also tha cause why i cant show pics:(

and now the question:
i heared that dod1.1 will be released next week
so whats up with the dod fdg...will it be changed?!?
can the maps from 1.0 still be played!?
if no, we should give the contest a few days more
to change it to 1.1...

sorry for bad english :-D
nice greetings from germany

I believe it's unfair to make the only version submitted the official cr44. There may be good versions out there just not finished quick enough to be submitted. If mine is not finished in time for the deadline I will still release it under a altered name, which I believe all variations should be anyways.

I didnt know the contest was for a new official cr44 though. This map has potential to be a house map.
