Load up your reference smd file, then just import the anim smd file you wish to edit, click on the Anim button bottom right corner and your away.

this is the one and only animation tutorial i used. a breating animation for gorden freeman.

in fact in my experiance sometimes its harder to edit an existing animation than makeing a new one

go get em tiger (http://www.planetquake.com/polycount/resources/halflife/tutorials.shtml)

Well, to tell you the truth, the only tutorial i got was this:

Go into animation mode.
Select a bone.
Position it.
Set Keyframe.
Move slider to next desired keyframe.

I experimented and experimented with it for nearly 2 years. Now im doing pretty good according to some people.

Press move and move it.
or
Press rotate and rotate it.

Im serious, this is all i used.

generally speaking, moving isn't something you should do with character animation, always rotate, since that's how bones work. Of course with non-organic objects this doesn't apply.
