terrain is pretty easy guys, but since you're lazy

might want to get batch compiler too, and his map viewer seems neat

Terrain isn't too hard, but Nem's terrain gen can save you a LOT of time. Most people make terrain as boring as possible (or just fail to make it interesting, you can choose) but with Nem's tools if you learn how to do terrain exciting while keeping the VIS blocking going you can have some really nice terrain even on a large, open map. Granted you can do it by hand...but why spend 20 hours on terrain when you can get it done in 2 with some great tools.

Why spend 2 hours on a terrain generator when you can do the work yourself twice as good, even if it takes 40 hours ?!

Becourse your work will be alot better since you, hopefully, understand how the engine works and can use that to your advantage. Atleast I havent seen any genetor that does that

thanx slurm.

and I understand your concerns keldon, but im reletively new to mapping, and i havnt much time with school and stuff.

I have to disagree Kheldon, but that's just my opinion against yours I guess. I generally start out with Nem's Terrain gen on maps with complex terrain and then hand edit to resolve anything I didn't like from the base setup I did with it. The terrain with that tool is generally better looking and heck, like I mentioned before, it saves you loads of time. But hey, if you don't think so, that's cool with me. It's like the guys who suggest using notepad to build your map. Yeah, you can, but why waste time. =)

I see your point and I totally agrea with its up to the mapper, but what Im trying to say is that the terrain generator are mostly a shortcut and its not ALWAYS the best way...

... The best way is to use triangles and vertex manipulation.

It takes more time but the result is what you had in mind, not what a program partially made for you.

@Kehldon: Now I agree with you 100%. It is true that sometimes the terrain gen is simply not up to the task and I've built maps both ways.

The times where it can save you some time though are pretty nice.

@Mythic _Kruger: Once again...if you can save time and not have any problems with r_speeds etc. then why would you not want to? But ah well, to each his own. I'm finished arguing as to the merits of Nem's Terrain Generator. Try it if you haven't...if you don't like it don't use it. =) Pertty simple.
