Canteen Anim Idea

How bout an idle v_model anim where the firearm lowers (or cants to the side) and the left hand raises a canteen up to the player's mouth (not dead center of the screen, but noticable).

So, let's say an allied staff sgt is playing defense. He takes up a good spot and holds still for like 20-30 seconds (or however long). The v_model right hand would lower the Thompson slightly (at an angle ... a nice way to show-off good modeling skills) and the v_model left hand would take a quick (but not too quick) swig from a canteen. Maybe a .wav could play .. food for thought.

Constructive responses always preferred

This could easily be done for the player animations as you could creat an extra bone and assigned the canteen model to it, then you could make the animations so during other animations or whatever the canteen stays either well below ground level or hiden inside a large part of the model (torso/backpack mabye).

However I'm not an animator so i have no idea how to do what i just said lol Sounds like a good idea though. The V model animation may be a bit tricky though and could get very annoying very quickly lol

Great idea though, very original.

hrmm..

liek ska said some extra bones would need to be added. i see it as you have the thompson V model, with everyhting it needs, but in the lower left floats a canteen that is retreivable, similar to the way the magazine works, only it isnt attached to anthing.

here i drew an extrememly detailed drawing of how i think it would look in paint.

to the left is the v model veiw, with bones and what not. to the right is the first person view of the canteen coming up.

This would be cake for me to do, but if you started to shoot in the middle of the canteen anim then the canteen would magically disappear and you'd have both hands on the gun immediately.

how could this work?

- you cant add another anim into the V_model of say "thompson"

- you cant add another totally separate V_model

i guesss im not understanding it fully. could someone explain?

@ cheese

you could jus edit the thompsons Idle animation so rather than jus sawying and fingers moving and that a canteen is raised to the player mouth.

a tricky prospect. the problem with this is time, and reality. idle animations are quite fast comparativly. basically you need to make time for both the animation, as well as the pause between the animation. if you make the animation too fast, it looks like crap. but if you do it to slow, there will be no pause between the swigs. he will pull it out, drink put it back then immediatly do it again. and again. ad nauseum. tricky indeed. bittles also pointed out that if you were to fire, the canteen would magically dissapear.

also reality. how real will it look? would there be a cap on the canteen? does he unsrcrew it? or is it already open? the canteen would have to be very carefully origined as well so that it ends up approximatly where you would expect a mouth, as well as not clipping, or going into your head or chest.

now it could be done. but it could be a mixed bag. its quite simple to just stow a canteen model away from veiw, but its quite another to animate it realistically with the time restriction.

in closeing.. im probably making no sense. but it sounded good in my head

I don't think there's a limit to the length of the idle animations, since there's no code being executed unless you're firing or reloading. You can just extend the idle animation to however long you want, two or three minutes even, so it happens rerely enough not to get annoying.

...How about someone do a quick render for us to see if it'd be any good. Im sure a canteen in a hand is a piece of cake for those experienced modelers out there.
