The Follies of Sub-modeled player models, and a solution

This a complaint/suggestion regarding the player models being held within submodels within 5 mdl files.

I loathe Submodels. The dev-team may have saved file space, but they have essentially screwed the MSA community. How am I supposed to make super high quality models, that fit in the the size limits of one HL model, which is about 4 megs. ANY more bmps, and it doesnt facking compile! This also means about ONE reference smd PER CLASS! WHAT KIND OF DETAIL CAN I FIT IN ONE FACKING REFERENCE SMD!! HOW AM I SUPPOSED TO MAKE A SET OF PLAYERS WHEN I CANT HAVE MUCH MORE THAN 8 512 x 512 SKINS?

I'm telling yah, this is by far the WORST mistake they've ever made. Not only will this confuse most modelers out there, but the 30 megs of space they've saved on my hard drive just wasnt worth it. This is why they need to make a nother version with high quilaity player models. People with low end computers who couldnt handle the 3rdID or SSv3 can have these default models if they like. But please, include an option for us high-end user, a high-quiality model option. It doesnt necessarily give us higher-quailty models, but just gives us the 40+ something player models i wouldnt mind having sucking up 50 megs of disk space. Would it be THAT hard to implement? SO, if you ahve a high end susyem, check in the 'install high quality models' option during the install, and burn 50 megs of HD space, but its 50 megs that you can use to have wonderful models.

Hell, maybe I'll go copy this and make it a thread in MSA and suggestion forums. And by all means, post your thoughts here.

i was indeed a bit confused when browsing through the dod directory

The submodels are just the sleeves right? Have you tried just losing the submodels and seeing if it'll run in game? I can try fiddling around myself, but I'll have to do it after I get back from the bank. Toodles.

Nevermind. I had the mis-uhh-fortune of installing over my old DoD directory and when I quickly looked at the directory structure everything looked normal. ;)

But after closer inspection I understand the predicament a little better.

Is it not possible to just take all this backpack and crap and find a place for it in the main equipment skin? You know, do a little optimization and lose all the different faces. I remember you had the same face for your entire hi-poly pack. ;)

I think it's still quite possible to make custom player models. But you're right, it might confuse some people.

Devin, 8 512x512 bitmaps are more than enough to create a good set of player models. Don't worry about it so much.

I'll sign the petition Devin... I would like to see individual class models as well... I was very disappointed to see submodeled player models as well...

i agree with devin, although it saved space, it has severly limited the amount of detail we can pour into making our custom model replacements.

and btw..

what about that 'high poly player pack' the dev team was talking about making for the rest of the high-end users of the community? i mean, damn the default models of 1.0 are awesome,(despite a few things here and there) so i cant imagine what a high-poly pack by them would look like.

I'm extremely mad at this mistake, remember when Thunder Weenie said we could kill him and stone the other team members if they REALLY REALLY screwed up?
*picks up bag-o-bloody-stones*
I say release a small fix that corrects this horrifying mistake, we don't want no one should get hurt.

I agree with you Dev.

Was looking forward to using as many of your releases for 1.0 as possible, and it would seem this is a huge stumbling block for you and the other talented modellers out there.

If you do get around this problem, feel free to continue posting MRELS on the [C4] Forums. We appreciated all your efforts the last time around, and we will, in particular me and [C4]Warlord, be happy to beta-test anything you can come up with for 1.0.

Regards,

[C4]Draeger[OwP].

 ****, Im working all weekend so i had no time to download dod, this is the first time i came on since friday morning.

So correct me if ive got this wrong but, you can no longer make individual body/uniform models for each class? If this is the case that kinda sucks. Are the DoD team planning on releasing a patch or summat to mabye fix this?

I'm with Devin. Horriable mistake, and not worth it. In my opnion, there is no reason why the guys with the 133's that want to play need to ruin it for everyone else. The average machine now has to atleast be a 900mhz, if not more. Give us the polys! Give us the models!

I agree the submodel thing is screwy. I'm low end and would like to convert the LOW poly models I was using but the way it is now I guess I can't.

Im glad to see so many agree. I figured either no one cared, no one knew what in blazes i was talking about, or (shudder) you peoploe liked submodels.

I earnestly hope the Dev Teams works in an optional patch to correct this, submodels limit the creativity, cause it ALL has to be worked and crammed in one mdl file. This is fine you were planning on meshing so all the players clothes and gear could fit on one bmp, like the DoD team, but i want to see a gross excess of bmps and polygons. And unless things get fixed, those days might be over. Now, 2ltben, pass me some of them stones.

And, in other news today......

AH THE HACKJOB PRO! Release that good stuff. Im in need of that BAR.

I completely agree with you on skins and submodels, I always figured they were gonna implement an option for low end or high end. Or maybe even give you a set of models you can pick to use in game, one set is made for low end, and another for high end.

i agree...submodels will kill the editing community that has kept games like HL and all its mods so popular for so long...

05-04-2003, 01:59 PM
i agree with devin, i wouldnt mind 50 more MB. and seriously, i want to see some high poly stuff, just so my GF 4ti 4600 gets some excersise. =P
