[MREQ] map models for Africa

07-08-2003, 03:27 AM
Hi all talented modelers and skinners out there,

some of you might remember me and my requests from the old forum. I still would like to have some help for the African scenario. I work with Bleibringer (dod_feldfeuer, dod_ambushcombat) on a map called dod_tobruk. Unfortunately neither one of us is a good modeler or skinner. So, let me ask you if you are willing to help us out with modelling new vehicles, antitank guns and other objects found in the African battle or altering and reskinning existing models to make them fit into the scenario.

Here are a few examples what would be nice to see on a map:

Panzer IV (http://www.gtnw.de/dod/grafiken/panzerIV.jpg)

Panzer III (http://www.gtnw.de/dod/grafiken/panzerIII.jpg)

sdkfz250/3 (http://www.gtnw.de/dod/grafiken/greif.jpg)

sdkfz222 (http://www.gtnw.de/dod/grafiken/sdkfz222.jpg)

These are all just examples to give you an idea what I am talking about. If you are interested let me know and I will supply you with tons of reference (and requests ;) ).

I have an old "panzer III" model from dod_schwetz which lacks a destroyed version and a proper skin for africa. I also have the "panzer" IV" model by h&k which would need a new skin and maybe a different destroyed version or even some tank commander sitting in the tower.

We hope there are a few talented ppl out there willing to make something different than the hundredth version of a kar98 or thompson.

So long,
Baldrun

Cheeto
07-08-2003, 09:42 AM
Well you could just reskin the default Panzers, right? As for the other two, I'll see if I can make something, but I've never done vehicles before.

Cheeto
07-08-2003, 09:44 AM
Oh yeah, and if we do make something, can we help play the map? :D

07-08-2003, 11:21 AM
Can't wait to see your first attempts, cheeto. An invitation to the playtests is obvious if you come up with something useful ;)

These ^^ pics are just examples, if you are interested in trying something different (antitankguns, british crusader, tankmine, etc.) instead pm me. Otherwise I will just pm you a link for more reference pics soon.

I tried to reskin these two tank models, but I had to admit that I did a lousy job :( . So, I ask more talented ppl here to help us out.

07-08-2003, 01:06 PM
oh come on I didnt add a desert skin to my C-47 to get it not used :P

I'll accept if its not in your stoyline but keep in mind it does have 1.

Cheeto
07-08-2003, 01:19 PM
Well I can't join in playtests cos my net connnection won't let me play online. But I was thinking more along the lines of testing the map with Sturmbot to see how well they can do on it.

Also, do you have a timeframe in mind for these things?

07-08-2003, 02:04 PM
@ angry beaver:
Hi mate, I downloaded ur nice c-47 a while ago, but unfortunately it doesn't fit in the storyline. Tobruk was defended by Tommies, Aussies, SouthAfricans and Polish. And so far I know...no C-47 were used there. Maybe I will use it for dod_operation_torch.

@ cheeto:
Timeframe is about six weeks for the 1st model versions. Playtesting with Sturmbot is fine, too. Would be great if you could write some criticsm then.

07-09-2003, 10:15 AM
O by the way angry beaver can you make a destroyed version of the C-47??

07-09-2003, 03:41 PM
I'm on the wrong comp at the moment while my room is painted. I dont have any modeling tools any texture tools any mapping tools. have nothing cept net and DOD :/ but its on ym to do list when I get back. the destroyed and jump models are already started.

Along with the vehicle models you guys should try to make a big hill of some sort of sand to save wpolys he can put them on the borders of the map to give the illusion that theirs a long desert

We have thought about this b4 and we will give it a shot in one of the test versions.

Invasionworks HK model pack includes a Panzer III, Panzer IV as well as some Sdkfz`s and some other nice tanks.

http://www.invasionworks.com/downloads.php?category=2

You wight wanna check it out.

07-11-2003, 04:06 AM
Thx, but I mentioned in the very 1st post that I already have the models from h&k, which we could use in our map. I wouldn't ask for new models and reskinning if h&k's old and very well known map model pack or other map model packs had what we are looking for.

Anyways, if you stumble over a model which can be used for an Africa map let me know.

@ divisionazul:
Thx a lot, that is exactly the kind of stuff I am looking for, too.
Your work on the fueltruck's skin is a nice idea. Maybe you want to make the tyres look like they did b4. It might look a little better then.

@ Joe Anderson:
Good to see you again. I was hoping you'd show up in this thread. I still remember searching reference pics for that gun, but I never saw a final release...only a promising screenshot. Could you plz mail it to me, I'd love to take a look at it. We might use it.
I think I have the right request for u....we need a british antitankgun for dod_tobruk. I will pm you about it soon.

@ all:
A little teaser picture for the map project dod_tobruk...check it out.

Iīve made ages ago a opel blitz truck in prefab format

If u wanna reskin it or convert it to mdl send me a pm

A few screenshots:
#1 (http://www.iespana.es/divisionazul/photos/blitz00.jpg)
#2
(http://www.iespana.es/divisionazul/photos/blitz01.jpg) #3 (http://www.iespana.es/divisionazul/photos/blitz02.jpg)

The D/L (http://www.iespana.es/divisionazul/files/prefabs/opel_blitz.zip)

It contains rmf or map file and wad textures (need a re-paint with hi-cuality textures... these are awful...) of two versions.
If someone converts it to mdl (please...) i could reskin it to desert scheme with akorps logotype also.

Iīll see what can i do with the fueltruck :)

Ok all....being an annoying perfectionist myself, I went through and added some new stuff to my pak43/41 and made it more realistic with some new stuff to 1.0 like transparencies and such. Here are some preview pics. I just have to destroy this model and its all done if that makes any sense ;) Any last second suggestions say them now.

I still want to do the tanks that you asked me to do, however, I've been side tracked lately with other projects. I haven't forgotten :)

(I just wished the tank's used a more normal skinmesh)

07-14-2003, 11:16 PM
I am very pleased that there are actually ppl willing to work on mapmodels. I never expected so many to help out. I am positively surprised cause normally threads like this one die very fast.

Thx a lot for your effort so far guys. With your help we will be able to bring a new quality map scenario to DoD. ;)

Keep up that good work. :)

07-14-2003, 11:36 PM
Si teh Uber nice joe. but could you plz increase the poly count on the wheels? the 8 sides nearly ruins such a nice looking model! i mean if you amp it to 12 sides it will look better but takes 96 more polys. I know its hard trying to find that balance but i do thing the wheels could do to be 12 sides.

Joe Anderson
07-15-2003, 09:41 AM
can do on the wheels...yeah that was one thing that was pissing me off about it too lol. Ok Im almost done with the destroyed model, and I've got a few more 88s up my sleeve as well, all used in Africa.

Iīm trying to repaint the lovemeister tiger (iīll send him an email when i finish it...) I donīt have the exact color yet... this is a preview.. is not finished yet!!! it needs more details...

If anyones atachs a photo of the REAL tankīs textures... i would be thankfull... the ones from bf1942 are so dark...

07-19-2003, 01:58 AM
Oh, I already have a nice reskin for the Lovemeister Tiger:

Afrikatiger 1 (http://www.hinnerk.haeske.com/DoD/tiger_afrika.png)

Afrikatiger 2 (http://www.hinnerk.haeske.com/DoD/tiger_afrika2.png)

Did you do some more work on the fuel truck?

If you want to reskin a tank try the panzer III model from dod_schwetz or the panzer IV model with the short canon by h&k.

is that your skin azul? I couldnt for the life of me figure out whos it was. I've got about 2 gigs of DOD models and textures on my comptuer and I had this nice camo for an 88 with no credits to go with it and slapped the skin on the models. If it is yours, would you mind my using it for my releases?

Hi all,

I am back from my vacation. I did some work on the panzerIV skin for Africa. I will work some more on the tracks to darken them a little more. They look a little too rusty to me. Check it out and let me know what you think of it.

Panzer IV E 21st div in Africa (http://www.hinnerk.haeske.com/DoD/panzerIV.png)

Any comment or suggestion is welcome.

I will be back soon with our most urgent model requests for dod_tobruk. (most probably models for the Brits ;) )

Cheeto
08-23-2003, 09:24 AM
Bladrun this is that halftrack I was doing for you. I'm trying to figure out why it's so high poly and what I can do about it. It's almost 1000 polys at the moment, which for a map model is way too high.

08-24-2003, 02:07 PM
by C-47 is 1200 ish.

to take it down though, how about for the whells, u have a transpaernt texture, but pull a trick fl0 treid, have the inside the same colour, but like 8 sided. as for the tank bits, theres no need for a back\inside on the wheels. also you can transparecny those hole on the forn of the model.

Cheeto
08-24-2003, 02:43 PM
Yeah I got it down to just under 900 with most everything in. I removed the holes in the front and put those sloped armor panels over em, plus turned those smaller rear wheels into squares to be skinned with transparency to look round. My only complaint is that the armor looks paper thin in spots, and the interior is rather sparce, but I doubt it'll be really noticed.

08-26-2003, 12:33 AM
Looks nice so far,

I am sure you will be getting there with the poly count. ;)

08-26-2003, 02:39 AM
Ok, since the map is getting close to being finished we have realized that we do need a few models for the brits. Our most urgent requests for british models for dod_tobruk are:

1. A crusader tank (http://www.hinnerk.haeske.com/DoD/crusader.jpg).
(Different versions: 1 regular, 2 with gun pointing sideways, 1 regular with palm leaves (http://www.hinnerk.haeske.com/DoD/palmenblatt.bmp) [somewhat like this (http://www.hinnerk.haeske.com/DoD/palmcamouflage.jpg)], 2 regular with palm leaves, 1 destroyed version and most perfect would be a regular with Mazy's tank commander and a destroyed one with the dead comander)

2. A british 6 pounder antitankgun (http://www.hinnerk.haeske.com/DoD/6pounder.gif).
(Different versions: 1 regular for firing, 1 for towing, 1 destroyed and maybe 1 camouflaged one with leaves)

3. A british antiaircraftgun (http://www.hinnerk.haeske.com/DoD/bofors.gif).
(Different versions: 1 regular pointing up in the air for firing, 1 for towing, 1 destroyed and maybe 1 camouflaged one with leaves)

As always...contact me for further reference pics if you are interested in modelling one of these.
