So, how big are maps now?
nm, after doing a big of math the mapsizes should be 22400 feet now:D

Yeah, vehicles are now a distinct possiblity. I wonder if they'll be AI controlled or player controlled. Plus, we'll have REAL snipers now. :D

Did you see the 500+ MB HL2 Movie? Gordon drives a buggie with a laser cannon mounted on the hood. Silly fool, of course there's going to be Vehicles. ~_^

I can't imagine how long it takes to animate: "ALL ur flags ARE belong to us...!!!"

Sgt.Sinister

you wont have to animate it...you just put the wav file in and type in what he says and the face will say it.

Textures are now what? A little over 1000X1000? That's great news. We can get some really nice looking detail going in the maps now.

07-04-2003, 10:58 AM
It will take several minutes to cross the map in a vehicle.

Big War field we get to play on here. :)

The textures can goto 2000x2000 24 bit, no more 256x256 256 color textures, imagine the player model detail!

:drools:

and we can make an operation market garden map, that bridge will be an easy task with the hl2 engine

all i can imagine is how much its gonna ***** my vid card.

reading that made me soil myself like 15 times over, my shorts are a' brimmin'.

everyone close your eyes and imagine with me...................................Higgins boats.................................violent seas......................real fog............................omaha beach

i think im gonna wait to upgrade once those groovy PCI Express cards are released.

imagine maps with tank support, imagine the clan matches.

imagine the rations, ok maybe too realistic...heh:o

I once again think that DoD only is for specifying the infantry roles in WW2, NOT doing it as BF1942...
So if we are having vehicle support in 2.0(?) then do such things like boats, (examples over channels to infiltrate enemy base at noght and such) or like you said, Higgins boats to infiltrate beaches. We could also have real mortars this time that require maps and coordinates etc. to use. Or 88's to destroy certain things like boats.. :p
It would be really cool if the Allies starts at "a Big Ship" (Im talking about beachmaps) at the same time when the map first starts, if the allied team makes it to the beaches (let's say in the ocean in the beginning of the shore) there's a flag or a "spot" that the allies could respawn next time they're KIA so we skip the ship next time, wich only for starting the map... Or maybe the big ship could be an intro scene so we start in different Higgins boats instead, once the map starts..

The axis would have their sandbagbunkers with already deployed MGs and 80mm mortars... There should also be camoflauge spots like grass in the hills where the snipers could lie all the round ;)...

Oh there's so much things we could do with that new enginge, it makes me cry of happiness :p

"all i can imagine is how much its gonna ***** my vid card"

Don't worry, texture sizes can be easily adjusted from the options.

and for those of you who skin... christ imagine how long its going to take to texture a 2000x2000 BMP... man. but the detail would be really amazing...

i firmly believe that DOD is the best World War 2 era game in existence.

Simply put, DOD is the best because of it's inherent small unit basis. Small unit's are a necessity and a drawback of the original HL engine.

Since half life is incapable of supporting large numbers of people, and large maps, DOD is based on small unit play.

With the VSE, DOD can break free of this small unit dependence.

However, DOD in my OPINION will ALWAYS really shine when dealing with small units. (god i typed small unit too much)

the only reason for vehicles are to spice up and expand the already wonderful gameplay.

DOD will always be the best of the best. DOD is BETTER then BF1942, MOH, and RTCW. Those games cater more towards quantity, DOD caters to quality at the expense of incredible graihics, but the low graphical quailty is a restriction of the original HL engine. NOt with HL2.

I only hope that while allowing DOD to step up to more reailstic and immersive graphics, and physics, the VSE allows an expansion on the limited amount of classes, abilities and various other things.

heh ran out of steam at the end!:D

Just something to think about guys, with the Source engine and dod hopefully going to it ;) once its out, there could be better ways to spawn, like for beach maps allies coming in on Landing craft and the axis having time to set up defences etc b4 they land.
Axis and/or allies arriving into their spawn areas in trucks/halftracks on tanks etc etc.

Just consider that a way to use vechiles instead of the bf1942 way ;) and maybe for support and/or you need to defend moving tanks and so forth.

I really don't think we should have tank.. :( But half-tracks with mounted MGs or something like that would be a really resistance once the allies discover it... ;)
Then wwe need some wort of bazooka ;)

Geesh, I can't wait to see what things we'll see with this new engine. Just like everyone else, I'm looking forward very impatiently to the new levels of immersion. Imagine playing a version of omaha beach 1,000X better than the moh version, on multiplayer... All the new tools modellers and mappers are going to have will give some serious flexibility to the custom community. IF DoD finally gets single player stuff going, it would be best to do it on this new engine, and then the custom community would blow up with the best new levels and scripted sequences. I can't wait, personally. All I can say is I'm already planning on building my next system right now.

yeah and with the kind of distances possible with the new engine hopefully they include downward trajectory to the bullets. So we don't get these pin point accurate kar-wh@res!!:D

IMO, BF1942 owns DoD. Why? Because of graphics and the huge maps that surround BF1942. However, with this new Source engine, BF1942 better watch it's back...

You forget to mention that 42 plays like crap though. The gun models look like hell, the plane FM is the most laughable thing I have ever seen. (People who call themselves 'pilots' on that game are below contempt. It is the planes that really killed it for me.)

They have yet to get a good balance of shooter and vehicles, although Op Flashpoint was closest IMO. If I want a shooter, DoD looks pretty darned good for the HL engine, and as for flying you can't beat IL-2 Sturmovik Forgotten Battles. I have yet to line up for my plane, then have some ass teammate fire at me for taking it! Mixing the two is just asking for the kind of asshats that populate BF'42.

I have both DoD and Bf1942 RTR. The winner: DoD. Why? Bad weapon models, bad and unrealistic classes, weak weak weak sounds. I'm in a battlefield and I have to be like 2 meters from a guy to hear his gun for God's sake. I can't feel the battle if I can't hear any guns. SMGS and rifles can shoot you as if they were snipers. I still play bf1942 from time to time though. I can't wait for DoD on the HL2 engine. It'll push aside all the other WWII FPS games on better engines that claim to be realistic ( no offense ) oh and map specific textures? :)

IMO put only about 1-2 tanks per team to retain dod infantry combat.. :)
